ITC Avant Garde Gothic

Type Specimen

Design Challenge

The goal of the project was to create an immersive type specimen book that showcased ITC Avant Garde Gothic across at least four weights. The design required an integration of poetry that aligned with the typeface’s history, creator, or visual characteristics. The challenge was to highlight the type family’s versatility while creating an engaging reader experience through a combination of typography, text, and visuals.

Design Process

ITC Avant Garde Gothic was selected for its geometric and modern aesthetic. Poetry by Mina Loy was chosen to complement the typeface, as both shared similar historical and creative contexts. The book’s design balanced the clean, structured lines of the typeface with the vivid, imaginative themes of Loy’s poetry. Careful attention was given to type treatments, grid systems, and visual motifs to create a cohesive and engaging layout.

Design Challenge

The completed specimen book celebrated the technical versatility of ITC Avant Garde Gothic while enhancing the reader’s experience through Mina Loy’s evocative poetry. The layout showcased the typeface’s aesthetic range and highlighted its suitability for both creative and functional applications. The book served as a sophisticated blend of typography and literature, creating a memorable and immersive experience.
